How does Therapeutic Plasma Exchange work?

Step 1. Withdrawal
Your blood is withdrawn via IV.
Step 2. Plasma Separation
Your withdrawn blood is processed in a centrifuge that separates
out your plasma from other blood components (red and white
blood cells, platelets).
Step 3. Replacement
Your plasma is replaced with saline and a protein called Albumin.
Step 4. Re-Infusion
Your freshly filtered blood is re-infused via IV.
How do you separate the plasma?
After the blood is drawn, it is run through a centrifuge that separates the plasma from the other blood products.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange at Extension Health is administered from our West Village NYC location and costs $10,000 per session. It is not covered by insurance and is self-pay only.
