How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy work?

Typically, the air we breathe is only 21% oxygen, but hyperbaric chambers create an environment that is close to 100% oxygen.

The chambers also increase the air pressure up to 1.5—3X higher than normal atmospheric levels.

By increasing the pressure, hyperbaric chambers allow the lungs to take in more oxygen than they can under typical conditions. And this improved oxygenation increases oxygen delivery to tissues throughout the body to promote cellular repair and healing.

Initial studies demonstrate that hyperbaric therapy may improve neurocognitive symptoms associated with Long-COVID. Patients involved in studies have noted improvements in sleep, energy, brain fog, and attention span. Though these initial results are promising, more research is needed.

Hyperbaric therapy is not recommended for anyone with the following conditions:
– collapsed lung
– ear condition or injury
– current cold or fever
– emphysema and pneumothorax

– Wear loose-fitting clothing
– Avoid make-up, hair products, perfumes and lotions (as they may be flammable in the chamber)
– Have a light meal 1-2 hours before your treatment
– Do not consume alcohol for 8-12 hours prior to treatment
– Avoid tobacco products for 4-6 hours prior to treatment

We follow a hyperemic-hypoxic paradox (HHP) protocol, which helps promote the anti-aging benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy by alternating between elevated and normal oxygen levels. To adhere to this protocol you will be asked to remove your oxygen mask for a 5 minute period every 20 minutes.

You will be seated in our chamber while it is filled with compressed air. As the chamber pressurizes, you may begin to feel a fullness/pressure building up in your ears, similar to when you fly on an airplane. Our staff will review multiple maneuvers, such as yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum, with you prior to entering the chamber that can help reduce the “full” ear sensation you will experience. Once the chamber is fully pressurized, this sensation should stop and you will not need to adjust your ears until depressurization. Then you can sleep, meditate, read, relax, watch a movie or listen to music during your session.

The most common side effect is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses caused by the change in pressure. To minimize this risk, patients learn techniques from our staff to clear their ears during compression. Occasionally, some patients may experience changes in their vision during their treatment period. These changes are usually minor and temporary. A rare side effect is oxygen toxicity, which is caused by administering too much oxygen.

There is typically no downtime after hyperbaric oxygen therapy and most patients immediately return to their daily activities.
